Your Vote Can Unite: Local Campaigning Against the Rise of Populist & Racist Parties in Europe
Type of activity: Discussion, Workshop
Description: The action of the campaign will take place in Vercelli, a city of about 47,000 inhabitants in Northern Italy, between Milan and Turin, where European and municipal elections will occur contemporaneously on the 25th of May.
Although the area around Vercelli has been for several years a stronghold of the xenophobic and populist party Lega Nord, the city itself is far more moderate than its surroundings. At the latest European elections (2009), in the Provincia of Vercelli Lega Nord’s turnout was over 17%, a much higher result than in city (11%); a similar gap is to be found in the latest national elections (2013), where LN results in the Provincia (8%) were more than twice as high as in the Comune (3%).
New generations, especially from low-income families, are a partial exception to the general principle of moderation in Vercelli: several cases of racism and intolerance have been reported in professional schools (a very different environment from Licei, attended mostly by children of high-income and/or high-education families).

– two conferences in two different schools (selected by our institutional partner, the local UNAR representative). Discussants will be representatives of local youth associations and/or youth workers; representatives of minorities (Roma, generally relatively included at the local level; second generation of migrants); famous personalities.

Description: During our Europe Week our project room LOTTE will change into an information office where we try to broach the issue of contemporary European questions.

Europe – Place of (Un)Just Peace
Type of activity: Annual Assembly with Theatre Plays, Discussions, Workshops, Concerts
Description: 2014 is a year of anniversaries: the start of the second world war 100 years ago, a caesura in European history, but also the eastern European expansion of the EU since 2004 which surmounted Europe’s separation. Therefore we put Europe in the focus of ASF’s this year’s annual assembly. With experts, artists and people of ASF’s history we want to talk about European past, developments and common memories to get new insights in the present situation and the questions and problems we face today. We will reflect on European identity, the meaning of war and peace, the perspectives of different religions and the interdependencies between ASF and the European peace policy.

European Union Parliamentary Elections Campaign 2014
Type of activity: Free Concerts, Press Conference
Description: Centre for Peace Studies will implement public activities that will use UNITED’s material for the „Your vote can unite“ campaign.
These activities are mostly focused on youth from few major cities in Croatia.
Together with local youth organizations with strong anti-fascist orientation we are organizing free concerts during which bands and organizers spread the message of the importance of political participation at elections (with the emphasis on EUP elections as the last year turnout was very poor) and the importance of choosing a political option that is not hate/discriminatory/inflammable speech orientated or exclusive towards minorities. It’s the responsibility of the EU citizens to preserve basic values and principles of open societies in Europe and to prevent the radicalization and prevalence of xenophobic, nationalistic parties in EU parliament.
Additional to the concerts, public awareness rising will be done through a model of ambassadors/public figures promoting values of non-discrimination and equality.
Regarding hate speech and exclusiveness, CPS developed a monitoring instrument to detect hate/discriminatory/inflammable speech in public space by candidates or/and leaders of political parties running for EUP.
The monitoring instrument is focused on detecting discriminatory attitudes in public sphere and spreading of prejudice and discriminatory attitudes among general population on behalf of political parties, public figures or organisations – detecting direct and obvious discriminatory messages.
Results will be presented at press conferences and through the “Public barometer for hate speech”, a web page on the political satire news portal www.news-bar.hr and on the Facebook page created for the purposes of the EU election campaign monitoring process.

Europe – Your Elections
Type of activity: Project Days
Description: On 25th May the European Parliament elections will take place in Germany – but what does the European Parliament actually? What about the other institutions in the EU? How do I contribute to shape the European policy?
With interactive simulation games about the EU Parliament and EU legislation Arbeit und Leben Sachsen will try to give answers to these questions. Additional to that you will get to know all important facts about the EU and the upcoming elections.

Europe Action Day
Type of activity: Festivity with Information Pavillons
Description: This action day aims on raising awareness for the importance of a common Europe and the European elections on 25th May.
Different schools from the region of Stuttgart will show performances about Europe. Next to different information pavilions that give information about Europe, the EU and its structure there will be panel discussions with political guests.
For children and youngsters there will be several interactive games like a Europe Rally with prizes.
The Europe Action Day will be the end event of the bus tour of the Ministry of State through Baden-Württemberg for the European Parliament elections.

Citizens’ Tailored EU Elections?
Type of activity: National Debate
Description: Throughout April and May, GONG will organize five targeted local public consultations across Croatia on specific topics characteristic for a particular area, such as the quality of democracy, protection and promotion of human rights, protection of public goods and economic and financial policy. The goal is to bring elusive European policies closer to the citizens and allow them the opportunity for their voices to be heard, seeing as now the policy framework of the European Union represents a framework that affects Croatia as well.
Conclusions from local consultations will be formulated as the requests of the Platform 112 – coalition of CSO’s for rule of law, which will be presented to the electoral candidates for disclosure. The culmination of the campaign for the EU elections is expected on 19th of May in Zagreb, when GONG will organize a national debate which will face Croatian candidates for members in the European Parliament.

Anti UKIP Protest
Type of activity: Demonstration
Description: Anti UKIP protest will be holding a demonstration outside the Lewisham election hustings to protest against racism and attempts to stir people up against migrants. They stand for working-class solidarity.
The problems in British society are not caused by immigration or people from other countries. They are caused by a *British* government that is making vicious cuts to jobs, public services and benefits to help the rich get richer at our expense.
They are protesting in particular against UKIP, which is the sharp edge of anti-migrant bigotry, but the problem is wider. All the main parties have promoted an anti-migrant and pro-cuts agenda. From the Tories and their Lib Dem stooges this is predictable – but even worse is Labour going along with it.
Wherever you were born, whatever your ethnic group, whatever your religion or lack of it, the answer is for people to stand together and organise, to tell the rich and powerful that people will not put up with this situation any more. If you agree – join the demonstration!

The Election Debate For Mechelen

European Union Parliamentary Elections Campaign 2014
Type of activity: Free Concerts, Press Conference
Description: Centre for Peace Studies will implement few public activities that will use UNITED’s material for the „Your vote can unite“ campaign.
These activities are mostly focused on youth from few major cities in Croatia.
Together with local youth organizations with strong anti-fascist orientation they are organizing free concerts during which bands and organizers raise awareness of the importance of political participation in elections (with the emphasis on EUP elections as the last year turnout was very poor) and the importance of choosing a political option that is not hate/discriminatory/inflammable speech orientated or exclusive towards minorities but preserves basic values and principles of open societies in Europe and prevent radicalization and prevalence of xenophobic, nationalistic parties in EU parliament. Except concerts, public awareness rising will be done through model of ambassadors/public figures promoting values of non-discrimination and equality.
Regarding hate speech and exclusiveness, CPS developed a monitoring instrument for detecting hate/discriminatory/inflammable speech in public space by candidates or/and leaders of political parties running for EUP.
This instrument is focused on detecting discriminatory attitudes in public sphere and the spreading of prejudice and discriminatory attitudes among the general population on behalf of political parties, public figures or organisations.
Results will be presented at a press conferences and through the “Public barometer for hate speech”, a web page on the political satire news portal www.news-bar.hr and on a Facebook page created for the purposes of EU PE campaign monitoring process.

2014 EU and Local Election Participation of Ethnic Monitory Groups

Description: In this final event of the Voter Education Project the Education Action Committee will highlight the upcoming 2014 Irish local elections on 23rd May 2014, (on the same day as the European Parliament election).
The aim of the session is to engage members from ethnic minority backgrounds and local candidates to run in the local elections 2014 as a means of encouraging active citizen participation and dialogue across all political parties and independent candidates and the KIF membership. The line-up of speakers includes three outstanding perspectives in relation to ethnic minority participation and engagement in the political process.

Description: In the course of the European Elections Welkom Onthaal wants to discuss the European foreigner policy at Europe’s boarders. The guest speaker will be the migration researcher Dr. Joris Schapendonk (Radboud University Nijmegen) who specialised on the migration of Sub-Sahara Africans and interviewed migrants in North-African countries on their way to Europe. The debate will be about the migration pressure from African countries on Europe, the dirty war that takes place at the external boarders and how far we go to protect “Fortress Europe”.

The European Extreme Right
Type of activity: International Conference, Demonstration
Description: Against the background of the threatening raise of the far right in Europe, this international conference will deal with the development of right-wing groups and different ways to oppose them. Case studies will be the raise of the Greek fascist group Golden Dawn, the success of the French Front National and the presence of fascists in the Ukrainian government.
The symposium will end with a demonstration at the anti-fascist monument on the Gellert-Hill.
