Last night, on April 23, a coordinated neo-nazi attack against several organisations which had joined the HateFree campaign took place in Prague. Cafes and other buildings were vandalised with graffiti featuring neo-nazi hate speech, much of it directed against refugees.
Participants of the European Conference “Moving Stories: Narratives of Migration Crossing Europe”, organised by UNITED for Intercultural Action, the European network against nationalism, racism and fascism and in support of migrants and refugees, representing organisations from all over Europe support the demonstration “Prague is not Afraid” against fear of migrants to be organised in Prague tomorrow, Monday 25 April.
“What we face in Prague and many other towns in Czechia is a result of social and economical despair leading to a xenophobic narrative. This increase of populist discourse and clearly nazi actions is symptomatic of the danger refugees in all European countries are facing nowadays.” said Mr. Geert Ates, director of UNITED.
Miroslav Prokeš, one of the Czech delegates to the conference taking place near Torino, Italy, said: “We will not accept a situation where refugees seeking shelter in Czechia, as well as those activists and companies that joined the governmental HateFree campaign, are threatened and stigmatised as a danger for the nation. We cannot accept, anywhere, anytime, anyhow, the nazi manifestations and the right-wing populist stances surfing on the fear and fantasies of people left alone and without clear hope toward the future.”
We demand that the Czech government takes its responsibility by tackling this situation properly in the spirit of human rights, freedoms and liberties. These are the real democratic values which we consider as core values of the European Union.
