This week we saw armed police surrounding a Muslim woman on a beach in Nice and forcing her to remove clothing. This is not about protecting a women’s liberty it is part of a racist and sexist policy being imposed on Muslim women in France, that will only serve to further mariginalise them in French society.The ban on the burkini has already been introduced in 15 towns it is crucial we come out to show our opposition to it. It is claimed the bans are “protecting the population” of France from terrorism and religious ideas, but women choosing to cover up on the beach is no threat to society.
