Migrants Contribute
March 28, 2015 /// 00:00
On Saturday 28th March there will be a celebratory ‘take over’ of the Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre as the Latin American community rises against the increasing levels of racism and xenophobia both in the press and increasingly being used as a political tool. The Latin American community is organizing a celebratory event to highlight the invaluable contribution that migrant entrepreneurs, artists, musicians, professionals and organizations make to British society. The event will see a series of spaces hosting musical and theatrical performances, art workshops for children, speakers and exhibitions, and voter registration pop up all over the shopping centre, which is a focal point for business activity and community life in the area. The event will then move to the nearby Coronet theatre at 5:00pm for 8:30pm finale.
Elephant and Castle, often nicknamed ‘the Latin quarter’, is home to the largest and oldest Latin American business cluster in London. There are 80 Latin American businesses in the Elephant and Castle area, each employing on average between 1-5 people, and attracting large number of visitors and customers to the area.
